that is the way I was taught in drivers ed. turn your whole body (as much as possible) so you can see everything behind you and to both sides, you should only back-up at low speeds so controlling with your left hand only shouldn't be too hard (in theory).

Pyroline is correct - a cold diesel will be noticeably sluggish for a while, becoming far more noticeable in cold weather. Very obvious if you have to drive uphill straight from a cold start, but they all do it. All other answers are very wrong & surprisingly so. If it starts well & ticks over smoothly straight away with no smoke, there's no glow plug circuit fault. Give pyro the 10 points.

Hands should always be near/on the wheel. Your not supposed to stop looking back until the car is fully stopped.

Some people do that, but it's not neccessary. Really, you just have to find out what's comfortable. I just look over my shoulder and I've never had any problems. Some people only use their mirror (definitely not recommended though). Just find what works for you.

That is one way.
My car, when shifted into reverse, tilts the side view mirrors downward. So I sit facing forward and just use the mirrors to back up.

In time, you will learn to back up by focusing on the outside rear view mirrors as well as the inside mirror.

Why would you need to do that? unless you have a bad neck you should be able to reverse a vehicle easily using your mirrors, I drive a large 4x4 and have Never clipped anything this works for me.
