is a good site for hotels in Italy in general and Venice in particular. When you've selected a city, you can sort choices by several categories including price and select by location on a map.

There are a couple of particular hotels you might want to look at: Hotel Bridge in the Castello West district is a few minutes walk from Piazza San Marco - 140 euro per night. Hotel Wildner also in Castello West is right on the lagoon - again only a couple of minutes from Piazza San Marco. - 180 euro per night. Hotel Le Boulevard is a 4 star at the Lido north - you'll need traghetto passes (or individual ride tickets) to get to Piazza San Marco - 169 euro per night.

Hotels in Venice are still pretty expensive; the cheapest will be in Cannereggio West not far from the train station. You can get a day or longer pass for the vaparetto to travel around or the walk to Piazza San Marco is 30 - 40 minutes.

The cheapest option is to stay somewhere on the mainland and take the boat or train to Venice. There are a lot of choices in the 55 - 75 euro per night range. Lido di Jessolo or Murano are nice.

I found a room for Carnevale a one minute walk from Piazza San Marco for 150 euro two days before I went last year.

I know you have said you want to be in the city centre, but do think about the outlying islands. We stayed on Murano and it was massively cheaper. The boats to and from Venice are very cheap and you can get passes for several days. We enjoyed the travelling about more and Murano has some great glass factories. There were no problems getting boats at all even late at night and you didn't have to wait very long.

Have a great time, we loved Venice when we went. Be sure to visit the Lido as well and go to Arsenale it's a lot less busy and has some nice parks.

If you are in the UK try and look on Expedia, this is the best site we found for reasonable prices.

I've found cheap and cheerful accommodation in Venice via www.hostelworld.com. We thought we were getting a bedroom with ensuite bathroom, it turned out to be a small private apartment in a quiet part of the city.

Come on, city centre? Venice? You can walk across the city of Venice in less than half an hour!

We stopped here http://www.venicehotelcadoro.com/en/index.htm
Dont try and get too close to St Marks. Part of the fun is getting around on the ferries etc. The hotel is about 5 mins walk from a vaperetto stop in the Cannaregio area. Cannaregio is nice, a lot of locals use the restaurants and trattorias here. The bars and food are much better than in the busy tourist areas. Reasonably priced aswell, we got smashed drinking Biancis for 90 cents a go.

Good luck finding anything under $300 per night -- but scouring the net, and trying travel-tip websites from Frommer, etc. should get you 10-13 ideas within 15 minutes. Next time, please indicate what YOU mean by reasonable (fairly subjective term, isn't it?)... to me, a $250 per night is a great bargain there... jump on it, if you get one.

Try http://www.venere.com/ and http://www.medhotels.com/ as I have found good hotels in Europe and North Africa using these sites.

Trip Advisor http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ will have reviews on numerous hotels.
