Why wont wireless work on my laptop?

My roommate tried many times to fix it for me, and we have similar laptops, it only works if I have that ethernet cable thing. It's frustrating.

Do you have a wireless network card to receive the wireless internet with? If you do is it setup to receive?

Ethernet cable is faster (if that helps at all) =)
