Between the wires you will need "Resistance" otherwise, it will be nothing more than a short.
Also, consider this. Even though you are attempting to protect your propery it may be illegal for you to just electrify this area. If someone did come up and get injured you could essentially be sued since this person never entered your home and did not burlarize you at this point in time. You will never truly know their intentions, you can only assume but a decent lawyer could get him a judgement / damages.
Oh, and you do know it don't take a lot of current to kill a person...how will you control this aspect to prevent death.
I would not even consider this, this whole plan does not permit for the unexpected. suppose it is kids that climb up there and get killed. Suppose animals come in contact with this - or suppose you are out there and trip & fall into the very area you electrified.

You would do better with a motion detector and a security system installed in your home. Remember, a burglar will not look for the hardest route into your home. If you have a balcony he will not climb the balcony to enter if he/she can pry open a window or door. if they work in a team one may climb the balcony as a deterant while the other enters the opposite side of the house..... an alarm system is the answer and it is legal.

Not to mention, if this were installed you will face criminal charges if found out. All that needs to be proven is intent, and just by its very existance your intent to " cause serious bodily injury" exist - This Is A Felony and you will see Jail Time if pursued.

I second tripping the breaker comment.

Electric fences use DC current - not AC current like we have in our homes. DC current is usually lower voltage but higher amperage which is much safer. Also, the electric fence setups pulse so if it hits you, you have a chance to back off. A constantly charged rail will often result in the victim not being able to remove him/herself from the rail and could result in very serious injury.

After checking to see if it is legal, go to a farm supply store and get an electric fence unit - you won't need a big one for just a railing. Be sure to post that it is charged (might defeat the purpose) because if someone other than a burglar gets hit with it, you will be in some big trouble!

Good Luck!

No real offense,,, and I noted your "Smiley" but to use 110 direct, probably would cause liability issues at the very least, and possible DEATH to those also not "BURGLERS".

Can it work? Certainly,,, you could create a WET situation, and find many BODIES on the ground or balcony,,,often. Might it be an intelligent means of securing your CASTLE? Doubtful.

I guess my other notion might be,,, IF This is a major issue, I probably would re-locate; But that's just my own opinion. If this is a satirical Q, then perhaps I've wasted my time indulging you?

Your options probably number in the dozens, and your motive might be skewed? This isn't exactly like Playstation 3. Assume for a moment, YOU happened to want to experience some feeling of having rain on your face, but forgot to turn off the power to the RAILING. Might you suspect that anyone finding you, on your balcony might come here asking,,,"How can I revive my buddy after he forgot he left the POWER ON?"

No, all that will do is blow fuses or breakers. BUT you can do it by driving a metal probe in the ground and hooking the white wire to the probe and the black wire to the fence.

As long as they are standing on the ground when they touch the fence they will get zapped.

If the rest of these people that answered, really think it will work, I suggest they not mess with electricity because they don't have a clue and will get hurt.

you'll need to insulate the fence from grounding out. This could be from ground contact, water contact, and fencepost contact. The way farmers do it is a ceramic insulator, but a rubber vibration damper woud do also. In a pinch you could wrap the post with electrical tape and use a plastic staple to hold the fence to the post. The final step is to attach only the hot wire to the fence. Since the animal (or whatever you are trying to keep in or out) is already grounded they will get a bad shock. I'm sure this is highly illeagal and subject to lawsuits or first degree murder charges.

It will work, but you need to check out the local laws concerning electrified fences, home defense etc. The laws are sometimes tough on people using electricity for defense.
Anyway, farmers usually use the two-wire attachment method to kelp livestock inside wire fences. Even a car baterry will work if the area isn't too large.

good luck

I'm assuming you want to connect these wire to a steel/ metal fence. Any way It would not work at all. the fence is grounded by the posts & you would just trip the breaker.
Even if this did work, You would be arrested & go to jail for doing anything like this.

No, it will simply kick the breaker. You are also asking for a lawsuit if anyone (including burglars) gets hurt or killed. Nothing stopping you from placing a sign "saying" the rails are electrified though.

Run a wire to the rail will electrify it. However if a burglar does touch the rail and gets hurt you will be suded and charged with negligence or worse.

This is utterly ridiculous, and everyone who is saying, "You shouldn't, but you could if you just..." is off his rocker.

You shouldn't do this. Period. It won't work, and you'll probably injure yourself trying to make it work.

Buy a security system. You know, the sort of thing MADE for this sort of situation.
