Providing the computer is stable when you are using it, hibernating can mean that your laptop boots faster.

The Windows XP (possibly Vista as well) hibernate function copies the contents of the computer's RAM memory to a hard disk (usually the C drive). The computer itself then turns off. Then when you want to use it again power it up as normal. Windows then puts the RAM memory data it saved back into the RAM.

I hibernate mine every night - I leave it plugged in to charge but as soon as it is then it stops drawing power & hibernation doesn't drain power a all.
I DO re-boot at least once a week though - clears out all those processes that have terminated badly & left threads & pages hanging around slowing your machine down!

Just hibernate it - and remeber to turn off the power pack (it still uses power when the laptop isn't on).

Hibernating doesn't use laptop power (it saves everything to the hard disk and shuts down the power) unlike standby which does use power.

The computer does shut down with hibernate but all the programs are stored on memory so you do not have to reboot. I use it all the time.

i would suggest to shut it down for these reasons:
1. power spike might damage the system
2. your laptop and power supply might over heat since the fans of the laptop are at the bottom

shut down is better, youll save battery life, stop room temp being raised, reduce risk of power spike dmg and stop the risk of loseing hibernated files you thought would be saved

better to switch it off because, your putting wear on the components for a start, you'll get a dry joint on the PCB inside the machine quicker. also effecting hard drive life time.

waste of electric

it will charge if it's switched off anyway (not from the mains), so don't see the point of putting it on hybernate for such a long time.

if your using it from the mains it charges the battery anyway. so again don't need to charge it.
