rebel a jock strap is for support when your engaged in sports
some people wear them when they ride bicycles because the testicals can get very sore, you will want to wear it with a cup in it when you engage in things like karate ( to keep from being kicked i the groin or wrestling,
A small woman of 90 lbs can bring down a 250 lb man with one kick to the groin.
some wear one when running because they can get very sore bobbing around. so take care.

If you remember that the actual name of the equipment is an athletic supporter, you may have a clue. It helps keep your "equipment" from getting mangled, squashed, twisted or dangling loose and in view during strenuous activity of an athletic kind. It may seem a pain, but the avoidance of real pain or discomfort is the issue.

dunno, I never wore one when I played sports. I wore a cup for a couple games (mostly against teams we knew played cheap) but that's it. I thought it was too awkward.
