Stephen King, James Herbert I think their books are brilliant in the unputdownable category.
I do agree with you about David Gemmell, have you tried Richard Jordan and Terry Goodkind, not in the same league granted, but still very readable.

Tolkein because of his depth of imagination and reading his books takes you away from the troubles of this world. Lord of The Rings has got to be one of the great books of all time.
Stephen Donaldson for his Thomas Covenant epics, they may be sci-fi fantasy but like Tolkein they take you to a place like no other.
Dickens has to be there too, unforgettable characters, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Magwitch, and a cast of thousands . Fantastic tales of the times he lived in, warts and all, how else would we have known about the workhouse and social conditons for so many poor and disadvantaged.
Vera Brittain who gave me my first insight into womens rights and the great war, with all its inherent slaughter and chaos.

The man himself if playwrights are permitted
Shakespeare!!
if authors only then Mervyn Peake for the great Gormenghast. The man can paint in words, and this is one hell of a Masterpiece!
Tolkien invented the middle earth universe which is incredible but I found his writing style often dry and irritating

I have two favourite authors and they both have the same name!
One is John E. Douglas, an American FBI agent who specialises in portfolios and profiles of murderers etc, and writes books on them.
The other is John Douglas, Birmingham writer, author and poet, and song-writer.
He has his own website under JOHN DOUGLAS POEMS uk
Then there is O. Douglas, but he hasn`t been on the writing scene now for 45 years.
