it only moves vertically. i tried cleaning the ball and the contacts. it is an old mouse, genius with a nine pin connection

It my have gone bad, but there are a few things to check first. First thing to do is clean the ball (which you did), but the dirt reall collects around the wheels on the inside of the ball housing. you can see the dirt on them, just use your finger nail and scrape all the crud away, and if that dosn't work it's time for a new mouse.

I had the old ball type too, always had problems. Then I bought an optical mouse for $10. It works great! Never skips or has to be cleaned. If you can afford it-its the only way to go. Got mine at Home Depot, but Ive seen them other places for 10 dollars also.

If you have opened and cleaned the area underneath the mouse (usually it has lots of lint in there) try plugging it back in and then restart your computer. You can also see if this mouse works on another computer. If it still wont work you can upgrade to a usb mouse, providing that you have usb ports on your computer.
