It was the trend. Just like the 1980s are big now, the music of the 50s and 60s was big then.

I agree with Flamingo. Oldies just kinda got big in the 80's, maybe it had something to do with surfing becoming so popular again, so stuff like the Beach Boys were real popular. I remember when I was a kid in the 80's and listened to nothing but the oldies station.

Most of the 80's movies I know had soundtracks of 80's music:
The Breakfast Club
Ferris Buller
Against All Odds
Flashdance
Streets of Fire
Buster = mixed contempery with 60's
Ladyhawke = specially orchestrated

Because they need some extra help to attract people from different ages or generations to see the movie. But it´s not just 80´s movies, it happens in the 90`s and today.

Not all 80's films had older soundtracks. Beverly Hills Cop had up to date music for the time it was released.
But even now some films have old music in them, Reservior Dogs is one such film but there are many others.

What were you expecting? Christina Aguilara? Avril Lavigne? They were using popular music and older music because that's what they had!
