I used to logon to one all the time but that person moved. Now I have a new one I try to connect to and it says I am connected and have "very good" signal strength yet when I open firefox it says "Server not found." How do I fix this?

It is unprotected but the owner is wise enough not to share internet access with anybody else. You can connect up to the router only but NEVER to the internet.
Come on, you can not always have a free ride. Get your own broadband connection.

There are many possible reasons. First check your own setting to see if you have your wireless network card setup properly. Make sure is it set to use DHCP to get a network IP and not set to a static IP. That will prevent you every time from connectiong.

Unprotected routers may also be protected in other ways. They may have mac address filters, and without using WEP or WPA encryption methods, mac address filters offer a layoer of protection but come accross as unprotected. Only the computers with mac addresses in the router tables can connect... A very good way to secure a network easily.

Also, make sure your wireless radio is turned on... I know is sounds silly, but some laptops come with on/off switches for their wireless cards. I guess it helps save battery life when off. So make sure your wireless radio is broadcasting.

That means alot of people who dont have the wireless connection are connecting to that free wireless access. You would not be able to to that. Because the router only gives you its "electric signal", but not the internet signal. So your computer is still connected to the router. But no internet signal, you can't surf the web. Good Luck,

depending if you have a newer laptop or computer, the computer may be protecting your internet/computer form anyone accesing your files form an unprotected or unsecure network, like linskys is unsecure you can share it with a lot of households and chances are they cna see what your doing so try findind one that is secure.
