Honestly I hate the use of that word no matter what race you are. I also find the use of ***** just as repulsive. I grew up in the seventies (yeah I am old and know it), during the ending of the civil rights movement and understand what people went through to get that and other racial slurs out of common, exceptable use. Now here we are 30 some years later and of all people I hear using it is individuals from the african-american community. Do you all know and understand what individuals (african-american and caucasian both) went through to end the acceptablity of using the n word? People died, were beat, were threatened and tormented, their children where killed, beat, threatened and tormented, and what seems to be the favorite word of choice for every ghetto-trash, gangster want-a-be who can belt out a few words that rhyme, you guessed it the n-word or something like it. I am a teacher at a urban high school where we have a 85% free or reduced lunch population (for those of you who do not understand that it means 85% of our students are from poor families) and I not only hear african-americans using the n-word but hispanic students seemed to like to call each other wb (if you do not know what that is email me and I will tell you) or any number of ethnic slurs.
The funny thing is how often to you see two caucasian kids or adults walk up to each other and say "hey, honky, cracker, trailer, etc,(put any racial slur currently used for someone who is "white") hows it hanging?" You don't because it sounds stupid, crude and honestly just low class. If you want to be treated with respect why don't you treat each other with respect first.
I find is very funny that the african-americans who have responded to this question say it is not ok for a caucasian person to call them the n word. I actually have several students who are extremely light skinned (they look caucasian) but have at least one parent who is african-american and they use the n word, and no one seems to be beating the crap out of them. So obviously the color of your skin really does not matter for who can or can not use the n word so why don't we all stop using it and that will cut out some of the confusion of who can and can not use such a horrible ethnic slur.
My two cents,
R

It is a derogatory word believed to be orignate back in the days of slavery in the U.S. (although it may have been used in other countries too) to denote an slave of African origin or ancestors and although slavery no longer exists the word still hangs around.
The word is probably a modified (by local usage) version of the word ***** which in Spanish means black.
Current usage is still derogatory and refers to a black individual. Basic use has been generally associated with white indiviudals using it against black individuals although it is very popular in rap songs and used freely by African-American youth. There are many attempts to phase out usage of the word from the english language but as long as the rap/hip-hop music industry continues to allow it in songs it will take a long time.
