If you have a sample of algae already and you just want to grow it, then cut off the neck end of a 2-liter soda bottle and fill it 3/4 full of tap water. Let the water stand for a day or two to let the chlorine evaporate. Put a drop of liquid plant fertilizer (like African violet food or Miracle Gro) in the water and add the algae. Place the bottle in an east-facing window.

If you don't have a sample and you want to collect one, find a lake, pond, river, garden pond, or birdbath. Put water from the source into your bottle and scrape a little of the green stuff from a surface to add to the bottle. Again put a drop of liquid fertilizer and put it in an east-facing window.

Algae always grows in an aquarium tank. Why not get one, fill it with water and just wait? I think that might work but not sure.

Here's a site for getting rid of algae but it may help you with info for growing it.

Also, call a pet store that carries fish and ask if you can have a algae-infested water sample OR go to a pond that has algae and take a sample.

you need to simulate the algae's natural environment. this means you need to consider water salinity, temperature and proper lighting if you want to culture it in an aquarium.
