Relax, it is going to be fun.
Get a good guidebook, I like the Lonely Planet series, and put some clothes in a back pack.
Jeans, maybe shorts, T-shirts and a sweater.
Do not take to much, you will walk with your things a lot, just expect to do some laundry.

Walking shoes and sandals if you like them.

I have just been promised by the radio that we are going to have good weather, but bring a waterproof jacket too.

You will certainly want to see the bigger towns, but do not forget that there are many great to visit small towns.

Hostels are good to stay, but sometimes it is as cheap to stay in a hotel or bed and breakfast.
If you have not booked hostels yet, think about phoning the night before, so you can be sure of a place to stay. (Summer is the busiest time of year.)
If you can not get a bed the night before, or in the morning, try to get to a town rather early in the day, often beds in hostels are given at ten in the morning if the current user fails to rebook for the day.

If traveling to Amsterdam make sure to check out the modern art museum and a pub called Gollem. When looking for a hostel, stay away from the Bull Dog or Bull Dog II. Pretty much any hostel within the red light district is going to full of what you would expect. They are cheap, but for good reason. Last but not least. If you are not bringing a bicycle then I would strongly suggest renting one when you are going to be in a town/city. Cycling is the major form of transportation for much of the citizenry, so do as the dutch do.
