Yet our politicians worry about the poor leaving other countries and entering this country illegally-
politicians actually proposing to give them a leg up while we keep our own poor hungry and cold.

Secular society has forgotten that Christian charity begins at home- perhaps our society is crumbling because our ideals have as well.
God bless America- amazing isn't it.

ADD: Shaliney- you must live in a bubble or suffer from Brain Rot come to Appalachia- I'll show you people that don't have running water, in door toilets and rely solely still on what they can grow and can to eat in the winter when the roads get so bad travel is impossible. It's not just here either- you'll find them under bridges, living in cars and in shanty towns built on the rail road tracks.

Where did you get that #? And what are their parameters for what defines poverty? If they own a color TV and a cell phone, they're aren't impoverished. To get an idea what REAL poverty is, go to an Indian village in Mexico or pretty much anywhere on the East Indian subcontinent.
America is the richest because ppl have the freedom and opportunity to be educated and work hard for success. But it won't remain so if the government keeps penalizing that work through confiscatory tax policies.

Well let's just give them money from your taxes then! Do you honestly care about some poor family or are you just against Bush? I'll post a source for you so some people don't think you're on a rant:

Of the POVERTY stats that you didn't give, do you know how many of them are illegal immigrants that live in poverty? You easily guess about 30-45% of illegals contribute to the poverty level. Can you imagine how many of the illegals that Reagan let live here ended up in poverty? Most from what I've seen, I live in Phoenix and almost all of the Maryvale and Sunnyslope areas are overrun with illegals and the product of immigration and live in poverty.

Too often when we think of "poverty" we think of those old Sally Struthers commercials showing poor villages with people living in grass huts and open sewers running down the street, with hungry children standing around. THAT IS POVERTY.

"Poverty" in the USA is a moving goal post. What does it mean to be poor in America today anyway? Often it means living in or owning a two or three bedroom home, complete with heat, electricity and clean water. Often AC. Usually a couple of TVs, cable or satellite, furniture, various electronic gadgets, one or two cars, plenty of food on the table, free education for the kids, and often gov't assisted health care.

I've linked to a report on what poverty in America is, at least as of 2004.

And you probably have something like the following for those 37 million:

87% have cable tv
83% own a car
46% probably go on some vacation
etc, etc, etc.

So my thoughts are as follows:

1. Poverty is a relative term. If you are talking about people who are starving in the streets and incapable of helping themselves, then let's help them.

2. You are not immune from the consequences of your actions. If you have done nothing to better yourself, are unwilling to take a menial job as a starting point on a ladder, or expect a handout from someone, then hit the road. I've got better things to spend my money on.

Alot of the jobs out there are given to illegal immagerants so employers can cut corners and costs.Alot of factories are also closing down and either heading south of the border or to China.I know of three places in the last year that shut down and moved away, and that is just in the small town I live in,Im sure this is happening every day in our country.Another thing I see alot of is people abusing welfare I see them in small over priced stores buying things they dont need and letting their kids go on mini shoppin sprees with them. And that is the good parents who do this.Alot of the people who live in the projects just give their acess card to the dope man for drugs and let their kids starve for the rest of the month. What is this world comming to?

All Americans living in poverty have only the Government to blame. I live in the suburbs of a City in which there are thousands of impoverished people with not even slice of bread to eat. The city does; however, Support people from Somalia. The have new cars, free housing, medical insurance, free college education, food stamps(free food). You see bumper stickers saying things like "You paid for it". They have stores in which are funded by the City in which Americans are not allowed to enter. Let an American speak ill of them and they go to jail. Fair? No....Reality? Yes

I don't know where you got that stat, but it is in error. Many of those in poverty in the USA are illegal aliens or legal immigrants. Also, millions of those in poverty are the children of illegal aliens who should not really be considered citizens. The same is true for the stat that there are 40+ million Americans that don't have health insurance.

By allowing these poor illegals to stay in our country, we are, in effect, importing poverty. We should export poverty by increasing the deportation of illegal aliens, and by not allowing them to work in our country. That would greatly decrease the number of "Americans" living in poverty, and it would reduce America' spending on social welfare programs by tens of billions each year.

In a free society we all have the right to fail. There are 2 types of poor people. 1) those who are either mentally or physically unable to make a living, (the unlucky poor). 2) those who have either drank, druged, or criminalized themselves into poverty(the unworthy poor) Category 1 has many government and private sector programs to help them, thanks to the US government and American employers. Category 2 should work on helping themselves as they are unworthy of my help. Always keep in mind being poor in the US usually means having a place to live, a car, a TV, plenty to eat, warm clothes, and enough left over for a beer or two. Being poor in most of the world means starving to death

Sounds like 37 million people that need to get off of wellfare and get a job. If we kickout all of the illegals there would be plenty of open jobs.
