In an obstacle filled environment the best thing to do is to have the router positioned on the same floor level as most of the computers in the network and closest to the computer which will be accessing the router the most. i have also been told by my cable company that in order for the router to work at peak performance to have it hooked up to it's own power supply, so that it's not sharing it with another appliance or device. in the outlets.

In a multiple level house, such as is my case, a range extender was the only way to get decent signals at the oppostie end of the house. I recommend getting the same brand as the currently existing router if available.

If wireless is a problem, the distance is short enough to easily hardwire the network.

For best results - put your wireless access device (router) as physically high and central to the facility as possible.

Linksys offers high gain antennas, you might consider one of those too.
