Without taking the car to the shop what is the easiest way to find out whats wrong with the air conditioner. Somebody told me my air compressor was gone, but when i asked around they said if the air compressor is not working and u turn on the ac it would make a squeaky sound, but it doesnt do that.

The compressor will not always, and actually rarely make noise if they have failed. With the hood up and A/C on High watch the compressor. Does it turn on at all? If so, it is ok and the problem is elsewhere. If it does not turn on, this doesn't mean it is bad either. If the system has lost it's "charge" of freon the compressor will not engage either. You can pick up a A/C pressure gauge cheap from the local parts store and check the A/C systems pressure. The gauge comes with instructions, and it is as easy as checking the pressure in your tires. An A/C compressor is a very expensive job, so you want to be sure it is bad before you replace it. Also if the system is charged, but the compressor doesn't engage you need to check and see if there is voltage coming to the compressor. This is done with a Volt meter. You turn the system on and check the plug that goes to the compressor for power and ground. This does again require special tools. I don't know if you have an Auto Zone by you, but if you do they have a tool loan program that you can borrow tools from for free! They may even have the gauge and volt meter, but I cant say for certain. Good luck!

P.S.
If the system "blows air", it has NOTHING to do with the compressor like a previous answer suggests. The blower motor is what forces air into the cabin of the vehicle, not the A/C compressor.

Its really tough to troubleshoot it without a little training, and a set of manifold gauges. About all you could do is check the AC belt, turn on the AC, and make sure the compressor clutch is turning. And make sure the blower is running. It would be best to leave it to the pros.

there are several ways a compressor can fail and unless you know what your doing and have the equipment to check it, there is no way you can find the problem yourself. have it check by a reputable shop, anything else will most likely be a waste of money.

does it still blow air ? if it does then it is not the compressor maybe you just need to have the system looked at and see what the mechanic can do . good luck .
