Yes it does, but you need to set it up to do a scan at some convenient time while the computer is running. Many people don't realise that the hard disk scanning component may be set for something like 4am when the computer is never on. If in doubt, open AVG from the desktop icon, click the Tests menu item and choose Scan Computer - Complete test. Then take a break and let AVG do its job. It will let you know if it finds anything.

Yes. It should detect and remove any existing viruses. It will then guard against any future ones. You can manually run the scan by clicking on the AVG icon near the clock on your PC. Looks like an orange quilt.
Also, since AVG does not include anything for detecting and clean spyware (very few anti-virus programs do), you will want to also scan your PC for spyware. Go to http://download.com and get the free Spybot Seek&Destroy program. Run it once the AVG virus scan is complete.
