I'm taking my first road trip in a few weeks. I'm traveling from Miami, to Atlanta then to Las Vegas. I've never taken a road trip, any one have some advise?

Plan a schedule in advance, but don't stay married to it. In other words, figure on being at a specific location on a specific day -- but don't be afraid to look around and see something interesting if you stumble on it. Half the fun is the journey.

For example -- you'll spend a half day going from Miami to Orlando. Stop at Disney World and spend the rest of the day there. It's worth it. Lots of hotels in Orlando, of course. The next day, on to Atlanta. Do you want to see New Orleans? Dallas? Monument Valley? Do your homework, and you'll have a great time.

Some good pictures and tips are at the Web site below.

First of all decide where you want to visit based upon your interests coupled with how much you want to spend. Do a bit of research on the internet to learn more about the places.

Use mapquest to plot out the route. Do not try to hurry the trip--enjoy each segment of it.

You really should not drive after dark for several reasons--one safety and another you will miss too much of the scenery (start early in the mornings). Take plenty of pictures,,actually take lots of them for the memories.

Finally enjoy your desitination

I hope this helps. I can make a few suggestions about the trip if i knew a bit more of your likes/dislikes. Email if you think i might be able to assist.

Most importantly, have fun.

Lots of anti-bacterial hand wash for the wonderful public restrooms you'll be forced to use. Toilet paper for maybe an emergency pit stop when there are no toilets around. Cash in case there's no ATM available. Back up credit card for emergencies. Water, drinkable, and what you can use for your radiator should there be a problem. A bat (protection). Audio books, cell phone. Phone numbers of people should you need to reach anyone. All your hotel info. GPS if you have it or a good map. A cooler filled with snacks and drinks.

Take lots of music (it's a hassle trying to find radio stations all the time). Also, take lots of snacks/drinks...this will save money in the long run (not so many trips to restaurants). Hand sanitizer is a great idea. Also, make sure you take sun glasses and a road atlas.
