You have to go to your council where they register births marriages and deaths. You will have to pay for new copy (about £5 for a small one and £8 for a full one). If it is your own then it will be no problem but if it is for someone else then you may need to take a signed note to say that you have their premission to obtain a copy of it. However, not all departments are that strict on the rules, I was able to pick up my cousins birth certificate without any of that, I just needed to know his parents names. Handy for me but kind of scary at the same time.

Go downtown to the Hall of Records department of City Hall. You will have to pay a minimal fee for the certificate. About $15. Have your identification card with picture on it, and your social security card. If you do not have an ID card, use a credit card, and any other document you have. especially with a photo. It won't be hard. Without a photo ID, they will ask you questions about your personal information, when you were born, etc. If you have an old school ID, great! Use it. No Problem. Merry Christmas!

Go on line. Find your state's government site. They should have a place where you can apply to get a birth certificate. You'll need info like birth place, birth date, maybe the hospital, mother's maiden name, father's name, maybe social security number. It'll probably cost ya like $25 and take a few weeks to get.

Most of the time they are filed at the health department in the county you were born in. Call or visit them and ask them for it. It will cost you some money and you may have to show photo ID.

If they don't have it then ask who keeps birth records for the county.

Write to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in whatever state you were born (or google them - a lot of states are online now) and they will send you an application for a duplicate. It will probably cost you a couple of dollars, but not a lot. Expect it to take a few weeks though, depending on the state.
