Well you need the CD. How are you gonna install any files?

and if you get one from a friend...your Product Key will not work.

Bottom Line is: You need the CD to install it

You have to have a CD to install Windows XP. Because you have a legitimate activation code, you can use ANY copy of the CD to install XP. So borrow one from a friend, neighbor, or favorite geek. Do the install using your code and everything should be fine. (Then make a copy of the CD for "archive purposes" before returning it)

You can also contact either the manufacturer of your PC or Microsoft itself. They will sell you an install CD (with no activation code) for $10-$20. A lot cheaper then $150 to purchase in the store.

borrow an xp cd from a friend and install it and when it asks for product code use your code. I use the same xp cd to install all my computers at home so I know it works fine as long as you have your own product code

You can purchase the media from your hardware vendor. If in fact, Windows XP came with your computer and you already have the key code.

If it is "off the shelf" and you lost the media, and you still have the license, you can call Microsoft for a replacement CD. I believe the cost is $20

Buy another copy of the operating system. The product key only prooves that you forked over $100 to Microsoft for their software. You need the CD to install the OS.
