I'm told I need a new starter, but can't afford it just yet. Is there any other way to get it to start just so I can get it home? I had to abandon it a few days ago when it wouldn't start and I'm sure the city will come along and tow it soon if I don't move it. Thanks for any suggestions!

the majority of the time a starter goes out its simply the solenoid and you could get one for about 12 bucks to get it to start try hitting the starter with a hammer til it starts

Starters don't generaly go out instantly.
They give you indications first. Like slow cranking speed, having to turn the key several times before your car starts.

Try a jumpstart first.
The added amperage\voltage may be enough to get it going once or twice.

Try a salvage yard - starters can be had there for about 20.00

Good enough for now, just make sure you do get a new one on there.
