How long do they keep them? Where do they store them?

They used to microfilm them but now they scan the images of the cheque, back and front, and keep these electronic images for years. They dispose of the actual cheque after scanning. You'd be surprised how people will ask for copies of cheques issued yrs ago especially for litigation purposes.

They are forwarded to the central bank, unless they do an electronic submission. I would assume they file for a certain time before disposal, if they do electronic submission, or are returned to the issuing bank for filing then disposal.
