Fortunately, most people who would say such a thing mainly display their ignorant bigotry.

People who are considerate would never equate an inborn trait with being stupid. Could you imagine replacing "gay" in that sentence with "left-handed?" All the lefties would tar and feather you!! :o)

Ignorance & intolerence should bother everyone, in a perfect world it would. I lived a hard life up until I was 30. I did bad things, therefore was exposed & touched by worse things. I hated. Now I am coming to understand that I can only control myself, not others. I have adopted a Karmic belief that if you project hate & negativity you will recieve the same. The old, what goes around comes around. I know it sounds corny but when some kid (or worse adult) utters those awesomely offensive words, I just smile in my belief that one day, that person's retribution will arrive on their doorstep & there will be no slamming the door on it.
I hope this makes you feel better & let's you know that you're not alone in this!!!

I think you are way too sensitive about this. The kids who say, "Dude, that's so gay" aren't necessarily idiots or homophobes. They're kids. Kids say stupid things without thinking about it. They are also very concerned with fitting in with their friends, and if that's the way their friends talk, they will too. I have talked to my son about the word "gay" (he's13), and he says, when kids his age call something gay, it has nothing to do with homosexuality. It's just a word.

It annoys me, too, but I have a lot of straight friends who say things like that out of reflex. And I know that its not meant to be derogatory, but I do correct them. They are a lot better now. Only through knowledge do people grow. You just give people the chance to learn. The world becomes a better place when we are the bigger/better person and take the time to do things like this. One person at a time.

Well he's probably doesnt try to offend you, thats just a saying lots of people use now a days to say the something is stupid. Not saying that the sexuality is stupid its just a saying. me and my friend say that all the time and we love gay people one of our closest friends is gay and we love him to death.

My kids use it all the time. So what? Why would it bother you if you weren't ashamed of being gay?

If the saying was, "that's so straight", I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Bugged? Yes....and I do not let it pass me by. I usually ask, "what do you base this on? Your highly developed ignorance? " That is usually enough to shut them up, and if it is not, I am prepared to continue the discussion, no matter where it leads...but then, I am not above decking someone. I do NOT believe in turning the other cheek, period. All that will get you is two bruised cheeks.

yeah, it's kinda crappy. you'd never use a racial epithet in the place of "dude, that's so (fill in blank)". i find a smile and civil explanation works wonders. on the other hand, being offended is a choice. right? you could just brush it off.

I have some sympathy. I used to object very much to the word "gay" being used for homosexuals. I still tend not to say "gay" unless I mean happy.
However, I understand that you see it as a derogatory term.

It bothers me and I'm straight. I tell my kids off for it constantly, but it's hard for them not to do it when everyone else does it.
