I've just listened to Marilyn Manson's version of Sweet Dreams are Made of This, and much prefer it to the original by the Eurhythmics. Have you any examples of superior covers?

The only cover verions I can think of that imho are better than the originals are

Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of 'People Are Strange' - no offence to the Doors but I think Mac and co. just handled it better, and

The Sundays' cover of Wild Horses, which was done from a completely different angle and actually made me like a song I'd previously disliked.

Shirley Bassey's version of I'm Coming Up gives a new meaning to 'extraordinary rendition'!

Chicago did their own 1986 cover of their 1970's hit called 25 0r 6 to 4. And the cover was fantastic, way better than the original.

There aren't many but there are some!

Little Help From My Friends was much better done by Joe Cocker than it was The Beatles.

I think The Stereophonics Handbag and Gladrags was a lot better than Rod Stewarts - they seem to fit the lyrics to the tune better.

I love MM's Sweet Dreams but I wouldn't say it was better!

I agree with Jay on the Sundays' "Wild Horses".

I'd also say Manfred Mann's "The MIghty Quinn". I like all Bob Dylan's versions that I've heard, but theirs has a special cheerful charm.

'Jealous Guy' by Roxy Music - I know I'm going to sound biased as Bryan Ferry is my all-time favourite singer, but I heard this when it came out and never heard John Lennon's one until years later. I know a few people who heard Roxy's version before John's, and they also prefer the Roxy one......

Bryan Ferry has kinda made the song 'his' now (and I don't mean that in a bad way towards Lennon!!) and it always goes down well at concerts..........god, I can feel the wrath of John Lennon fans coming my way.......!!!!!! (can I just say though, I also quite like John's one as well....)
