There are two definitions of nothing. True nothingness is one. Using that definition it is impossible to be doing nothing. After we are dead, we are decaying, and that is doing something.

Using the other definition of nothing, which is that there isn't a significant thing to consider, then we can do nothing. Laying in a box isn't a significant activity, so we don't count it as doing something. If my friend called my right now I might tell him I was "nothing much" and I'd be right. Just keep in mind that what is significant to one person may be insignificant to another.

I think your confusion is because there are two definitions of nothing: "truly nothing", and "nothing significant". I think in ordinary thinking we always use the "nothing significant" definition. True nothingness is probably something only thought about in questions about philosophy.

i agree, i dont think its possible to do nothing, you are breathing if nothing else, even if hooked up to machines that keep you breathing, who really know where your mind and spirit are at that point, though i do disagree about death, while our bodies are laying in a box perhaps, we are more then a body, so we are probably off doing something else

No. It is not possible unless you empty your mind fully. Hindu scripture "Bhagavad Gita" proclaims you are born to perform some activity always."Man cannot escape from performing Actions howsoever he may live. Therefore man should not renounce actions".

well for your information I will not be lying in a box doing nothing when I am dead, because my body isn't going into any coffin, my family knows this and well betide them if they put me in a coffin, I just want to be wrapped in clothe and burnt in an opened space, I suffer from claustrophobia and no way will I be able to rest in piece if I am placed in a coffin.

Let my ashes fly with the wind.

Depends on your definition of nothing, if you mean absolutely nothing then, no.
If your definition is a bit looser, as it is used in everyday conversation, then Yes, people do nothing all the time.

I don't know; the people in Washington DC come pretty close to doing nothing (and get paid for it!)

there is no such thing as nothing. nothing is somehting right. so if you are saying there is nothing, there is somehting because nothing is something. if you are doing nothing, you are doing something because nothing is somehting so there really is no such thing as nothing.
