I could not resist responding to this very interesting question. If we look at the history of colonialism. The scramble for Africa is a prime example of Europeans illegally residing in other countries. These very same countries which built their economies by forced entry into other countries designed laws to block migration into their own .For example in the UK the Grandfather Act was put in place to block the migration of commonwealth migrants from the west Indies.

People will always migrate in order to secure a better life. This is a perfectly natural survival instinct. Whether it is done legally or illegally as in the case of the colonists. But individuals do not intend to take over the running of the host country nor subjugate it's people. The natural response for the host population is to reject new comers because of competition for resources. To dehumanise a person is to cease to identify with them. Therefore this makes the migrant easier to exclude. Laws are man made to protect resources and maintain exclusivity. By the laws of nature there is no concept of illegal only survival.

Why would I have a problem with people who were born in other countries moving to the United States? Such would be bigotry, but I see that you're referring to those who do it illegally. Do you really think that illegal immigration is a victimless crime? Have you bothered taking a look at its effect on lowering the working wage thus edging out American citizens for jobs, burdening healthcare, education, and the criminal justice systems etc.? Sadly, there are some who are against illegal immigration because they're racist and afraid of foreigners, but the majority are just fed up with the fact that we can't respect our own laws and keep our borders intact.

I didn't realize American did this. They all seem happy with legal immigrants.

The word really here is illegal. Would you be happy with a burglar robbing your house because he want a better life. Remember he couldn't afford the plasma TV by himself and you earn enough to buy another one. Illegal immigration is the same. There are lots of people who immigrate to the USA that do it legally. Illegals just don't want to fill out the paper work.

There is no reason to have any illegal immigrants, the USA government has enough work permit schemes to allow people to work in the USA, whether on a short basis or longer.

It has nothing to do with weather or not they are good enough. It has to do with the word Illegal. We have laws on how to enter this country. They have broken the law there for they are illegal. Your Idea would make a case for every criminal out there. "What, am I not good enought to live in free society just because I raped a girl?" You see how silly it sounds. Maybe if people want to come to this country they should just ask and follow the law. Not sneak across the boarder.

I guess that depends on who you are referring to as "we"?

I believe that foreigners should be allowed to enter a country, but I also believe that those people should be documented just as I am. so that the govt can have a record of my taxes and paying my part to maintain the upkeep of the country. I realize many undocumented foreigners provide valuable services and I have no quarrel with their rights to immigrate. But that's the rub, IMMIGRATE. Not make a run for it. I am not a big fan (understatement) of our current govt in the US and I hate corporations, not because they exist, but because of the way they do business and violate law and in turn encourage illegal immigration and violate workers rights. Just because someone is willing to do a job for less doesn't make it right, in fact it ruins hundreds of years of hard work and even deaths of people who fought to get a minimum wage, child labor laws and all worker's right that YOU benefit from every day. Undocumented workers hurt our taxes and weaken our labor laws. I have no problem with them doing the work, I want them to be paid fairly for it and given medical benifits ect and in turn I wish them to be documented and pay taxes. It isn't much to ask. I think the recent immigration reform was too harsh, 8 year waiting period and pay $5k is outrageous. How about, if you have a job and family here you stay if not. too bad. Then make those jobs pay them a decent wage a treat them like human beings and US citizens. They fight in our army just fine........
I myself am part German who's family came through Ellis Island and were tagged like cattle but legal, I am also a smidgen Irish and they came through Ellis as well, and a whopping half Cherokee so don't' EVEN start asking for my papers.
I am sorry if this was off topic. Your question is somewhat vague, but I think I get what you are asking..... I hope.

Illegal means against the law. If people want to come to the US, they should do it legally. Lots of people do, every year.

anyone from any other country is (and has pretty much always been) welcome in the US.
even the aboriginal Indians welcomed outsiders who played by the rules
but criminals, have never been welcome whatever country they are from, including the US.

Because humans fear things they don't understand. Such as other languages... notice how we treat foreigners/ethnic minorities differently who don't have an accent?
Fear of the unknown!
