Audition... everything is based on an audition...you can suck at acting but if you had a good audition then they will think you are a good actor... and your in the show

Your question actually requires a long answer being that there are so many aspects which go into being an actor/actress. So, if I may, I recommend the following books:
A Practical Handbook for the Actor
ISBN# 0-394-74412-8
Michael Caine - Acting In Film
(an actors take on movie making)
ISBN# 1-55783-277-3
Both of these books are wonderful and easy reads. The Michael Caine book goes through everything an actor should expect to experience while making a movie (Which most of it applies to pretty much Theater as well)
They are both inexpensive (14.00 US and below) You might be able to find these in your local library as well. But just in case you wanted to purchase them, I have included the ISBN number for easy look up either online at Amazon (or other book sellers) or your local bookstore.
I hope this helps, and I wish you a wonderful experience learning the art of acting.

An actor must also know about the business of acting. They must know how to market themselves as a product and, in essence, "sell" themselves.
An actor who is serious about the business must also learn a technique that will allow them to express themselves and act appropriately. Sanford Meisner - The Neighborhood Playhouse, Lee Strasberg - The Actor's Studio, Stella Adler, David Mamet, Konstantin Stanislavski, etc.
Finally, an actor must learn to deal with rejection and NEVER give up. Because you may not work for months even years. But those that stick to it, DO it.
Lots of luck to you.

well there is alot of things an actor needs to know how to do, like you would have to attend drama school(acting school) to be Professionally trained(not al actors are),
Actors are generally expected to possess a number of skills, including good vocal projection, clarity of speech, physical expressiveness, a good sense of perspective, emotional availability, a well developed imagination, the ability to analyze and understand dramatic text, and the ability to emulate or generate emotional and physical conditions. Well-rounded actors are often also skilled in singing, dancing, emotional expressiveness, imitating dialects and accents, improvisation, observation and emulation, mime, stage combat, and performing classical texts such as Shakespeare.
hope that helps you

Here I'll list some:
-Projection of your voice
-Pronounciation
-Improv
-Staying in Character
-Singing if they are in musicals
-Being able to present themselves
-You have to know the parts of a stage and theatre vocabulary
-Being able to show believable emotions
-Transporting their audience
-Relating their script to real life experiences
-Cold Reading
-Being able to read aloud helps
-To be able to speak slow enough for the audience to understand, yet fast enough that you don't sound like you're trying too hard.
-Having the perfect amount of drama
-Using body language
-Adding lib
-To go with the flow and not disagree with everything the director says (That gets really annoying)
-Working with the actors around you and not critisizing their actions
-Confidence
Thats pretty much it. Break a leg!

An actor should know how to project their voice, have expression on their face, know how to keep their body open at all times to the audience, and know how to take direction.
And yes, an actor must know how to "act." It sounds simple, but it isn't. Train, train, and then train some more.

Know how to live with rejection, uncertainty, and poverty. Know how to handle well-meaning friends and relatives who think you might want to get a "real" job. Not trying to be negative, but that's why most people quit.
