I just moved to a friend's house and want to hook up my laptop to the Wireless internet line they have at home.

I see a new icon ( right buttom ) that show a new connection has been found but i am supossed to put in a key or code or something before the connection goes through.

How can we find that what that Wep/wap key is ? Where and how exactly can we get it from my friends internet line ?

Your friend must give you the security key, it has nothing to do with the internet.

The WPA-PSK, WPA2 or WEP key is stored in the wireless router. Your friend will be able to tell you what the key is. If they can't you may be able to read the key if you log into the wireless router from a system that is already connected to the wireless router. To do that open internet exploder or Firefox and type in http://192.168.1.1/
username is typically admin
Password is whatever your friend set it to.

If your friend has forgotten both the username and password to the router AND the WEP key, you'll have to do a hard reset of the router itself via the indent button on the router with a paperclip.

If your friend doesn't know what it is - ask if you can get in to his router and you will find the key there. Under where it says pass phrase. Using your browser enter http://192.168.0.1/ You will be asked for the user name and password. If they haven't been altered they are normally on the bottom of the router. The default are usually admin for the user name and password for the password. The WEP key is in hex and I think it is 10 digits long. If it's WPA. The key is in 4 boxes - so write them all down and enter them when prompted by you computer. You click the icon you mentioned search for the router and then connect and enter the key. You may need to use your friends computer to get in to the router - the encryption is to stop you or anyone else getting in!

Your friend should know it as he will have used it to set up the router and his own pcs. Otherwise you need to enter the router configurarion program as in the manual and check it from there.
