Well, a few significant moments in sports from the 1970's.....

The "Steel Curtain" Pittsburgh Steelers win 4 Superbowls during the decade

The Miami Dolphins complete the only perfect season in the Superbowl era in 1972

The Montreal Canadiens close out the decade by winning 4 straight Stanley Cups, 6 overall in the 70's

Palestinian terrorists take Israeli athletes hostage and murder 11 at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich

Canada defeats Russia in the famed "Summit Series" in 1972, a matchup of 8 games between the two ice hockey powerhouses, on a goal by Paul Henderson

That's a rather big assignment; it's a book waiting to be written. But I'll point you down one significant avenue for you to research:

The most important moment of sports in the 1970's came late in 1975, when Peter Seitz issued his decision on the Messersmith/McNally reserve clause case in baseball. The decision eliminated the reserve clause, which restricted a player to his team, and led to free agency in baseball. Other sports eventually followed suit, completely changing the business landscape for our games.

Salaries for players and revenues for teams in the major sports have absolutely skyrocketed since that day, which ended the idea of a sports team as a "mom and pop operation."

The terrorist attack in the 1972 Olympics had more important implications, but not to sport. I like to call that "the day everything changed," as terrorism became a tool in international affairs. It started an era that extends right through 9/11 and to this day.
