i was wondering if anyone gained weight on certain b.c. pills, and found one that didnt make them gain weight or even lose weight! also mood swings, i was wondering if you stay on the pill long enough they just go away cause i get them sooo bad

i have taken lutera and yaz
and im thinking about loestrin24Fe

I gained weight on depo (the shot) and that is all I have tried.

I had no weight change when using the ring...

While it is true that a small number of people do gain a small amount of weight when using any hormone-containing birth control method (the pill, Norplant, Depo-Provera, etc.), the good news is that OCPs (oral contraceptive pills) today contain lower doses of estrogen which in turn lead to fewer side effects, including weight gain. Also studies suggest that although weight gain is the best-known side effect of OCPs, it actually is not as common as people believe.



Several studies found that low dose OCPs cause no weight gain among women using them over one year compared to women using non-hormonal methods. A study specifically in adolescents found that sexually active teens using OCPs were no more likely to gain weight than those using barrier methods (condoms). From another study, it was shown that there again was no association between OCP use and weight gain, and in the very small minority of patients that did gain weight (less than 7%), the weight gain was greater than or equal to 6 lbs and the largest proportion of women in this study remained within two lbs of their starting weight while others had either no weight change or even a weight loss.



So from this info, we can see that although weight gain can be associated with OCP use, it is less common than previously believed. Also there does not seem to be a direct association between low-dose estrogen pills and weight gain. Therefore, we think that the OCP is very unlikely to be making it more difficult for you to lose weight.

I lost weight while on Yasmin (similar to Yaz, an older version of Yaz), nearly 10 lbs when I tried it in 2006. But I had to get off after 6 months because of some other problems that occurred. I also did Loestrin before but under the 1/20 Fe and I had a ton of problems with breakthrough bleeding while on it although I didn't have some of the other side effects that came with some of the higher dose birth control pills when it came to the amount of estrogen.

I have noticed this time around that any weight I may have gained on the pill brand I've been on the past few months has leveled off.

But some women I've talked to just don't do well with being on the pill and one of the reasons is because of like you said the mood swings and the issue of weight gain (which is mostly water because of the hormones in the medication).

For the passed few years I have tried yasmin, microgynon 20, loette, and juliette and all of them have made me put on weight and caused depression. Some of them have been better than others such as juliette. I was ok on it for a while but after about a year I had to stop because my depression was getting really bad and I hit a low point.
I've noticed that the longer you stay with a pill, the worse the moods get.
At the moment, i am experimenting with having 6 months off the pill, then 6 months on over summer. Only my 3rd month off at the moment so still not back to normal but better than I was 4 months ago.
