i asked this before and got only one answer.
currently, as i type, the sound is randomly starting up then stopping then starting.
im aware i need a new harddrive.
i have my data backed up on an external harddrive anyways.
is there any way to stop it from making noise?
its bugging the hell outta me, seriously.
its really extremely loud, and sometimes it just keeps getting louder, more or less like an engine reving up.
sometimes its accompanied by a rattling or other sounds.
i have no clue how to open the computer to clean it.
thats the advice ive been reading.
i also dont feel like spending another cent on this laptop.
otherwise, i'd buy another harddrive.
when i move the laptop is normally when it starts making noise [unless its like now, which its randomly making noise.]
is there a connection to this?
or something i can do to make it not do this?
or at least something whereas when it starts to make it stop?

any advice before i take a sledgehammer to this piece of ****?

If your hard disk is rattling then it's on it's way out. There is nothing you can do to fix the problem with the disk drive... it's a throwaway piece of kit. You can buy a new disk drive (but you don't want to do that) or you can stop using the laptop... and that's about it.

Are you sure it *is* the disk drive? It might be the fan in the laptop that's failing instead. If it's the fan, you'll probably need to take it to a shop for replacement... laptops are difficult to work on and the spares are harder to get than desktops. But you may be able to do it yourself... at a risk to a laptop you don't like using. Maybe it's just a bit of junk in the fan... so maybe you can clean it out fairly easily.

See if you can hear where the noise comes from... from the fan or the disk drive area. Revving like an engine sounds more like fan than disk drive.

A hard drive is not one platter but made up of several platters. There are actuator arms on top of the top latter, under the bottom platter and in between all the platters. At the end of each arm is a read/write head. As your hard drive spins at 4000 or 5200 rpm's, the actuator arms move back and forth so the read/write heads can find or write the information that you working on.

The only thing that you can do to stop the noise is replace the hard drive. On most laptops, there is an access door to accomplish this. There are usually only one or two screws holding this access door in place. DO NOT TRY TO LUBRICATE the hard drive!

If you try taking the laptop apart, good luck putting it back together. It often requires special tools in addition to training.

Good luck.

I'm having the exact same problem, so although I may not be able to give you an answer, you definitely have my sympathy! Only mine only makes noises while I'm trying to install WoW...as for yours, it seems as if you will have to take it to be fixed, and I'm not too sure on how much that'll cost. If you know someone who's good with computers then maybe you might get help for free. If not, either go to the troubleshooting page on your computer company's website or go to a technician. Capische?

to open the computer there is usually either clips or screws holding it together. If you don't have screws in the bottom of it, remove the battery and try carefully sliding a small screwdriver in the edge at the seams

Geez... if you feel like that, then you might as well just go and buy a new one! If not, then you should take the laptop to a professional at Best Buy or something to get it fixed.

Sounds to me ike the bearings are shot. I advise you get everything you need off the drive and trash it. It's only going to get louder.
