Check out Apophis' near miss in 2036 and 1950DA's date with destiny in 877 years. That last one IS a planet killer, but hopefully we'll have the technology to interdict. The scary ones are the unmapped ones that have impacts in less than 10 years. These most likely will be the ones coming from the far side of the sun...by the time we pick them up in our telescope, too little time for interdiction (we need at least 10 years advanced notice for a successful interdiction)>

There were 2 GREAT comets (that's what they call them) that came very close to earth in the mid to late 90's..HYAKUTAKE in 1996 and HALE-BOPP in 1997..I wasn't really aware of the comet until I caught a glimpse of HALE-BOPP on the way home from a trip (in the evening not night) and it was beautiful!.

I couldn't figure why they kept showing that cheesy "night of the comet" movie on HBO (I think) until I saw it.

They came very close so I guess that's where the collision myth came from.
Check the sites given below for more info and recent comets.

There was a comet called Hale - Bopp. Not threatening to earth but very pretty. Then in 86 there was Halley's Comet - again not threatening, but nice to look at. Pax - C
