I would go with HP. It is better made then Dell. Also, better tech help if need. HDD failures rarely happen. There are many ways to stop it before it happen. Also, I know a HDD over 10 years old and it works fine.

Get a Dell, hands down. Heres what you look for in a configuration...

Penitium 4, DUO CORE 2.5GHZ or above, 19inch or 20inch Flat Screen monitor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB Hard Drive, 256MB ATI or NVIDIA graphics card, Logitech quickcam Ultra Vision (BLK), Soundblast Audigy sound card, 5.1 speakers, OPTICAL mouse (no mouse with a ball on the bottom) and keyboard. (Alot of people like wireless keyboards but they take batteries, never do it. Just get a nice usb 2.0 keyboard) Your operating system should be Windows XP Pro at the very least and VISTA Ultimate at the very best. VISTA HOME I guess is fine but you wont regret Ultimate. For a printer always get an all-in-one printer. Fax, copy, print, scan. I recommend the HP 5610 for $99, does it all..

If you do this and buy this type of configuration dont spend more then $1600-$1800 this sytem will last you for 6yrs minimum.

Always update your drivers. Drivers are software that comes with the hardware (Motherboard in your computer (BIOS), and graphics card) Also software like msn messenger, adaware, norton, etc) If you make sure you update those and others on your system you will be ok. Most important software update is WINDOWS UPDATE. Always do that when it comes up. Always.

Drivers help the software and hardware play fair. Everyone is harmony. Binds the system together as one..

Well if you need anything else give me a holla..Remember, NEVER CELERON..

Celeron is the YUGO and WINNABEGO, Pentium DUO CORE is the LEXUS LS460L and BMW 750il and XEON QUAD CORE is the Veyron Bugatti and Spyker C8 Double 12.. (Dell Precisions)

P.S. NEVER PASSWORDS!!!! Always Passphrases. Your password could be "I really hate celer0n ch1ps" The entire sentence with a few numbers for letters. Just as you would write it with all the spaces and cap letter to begin the sentence. Its a strong passphrase. Always have a passphrase on your windows account and always WINDOWS + L when you walk away from the computer. Will lock others out of it.. WINDOWS button is usually next to the ALT button on the left side and the L button at the same time..

Take is from a Dell Support Tech, get a Dell, and make sure you get the warranty, nothing is guaranteed HDD failures are random and can happen no matter what brand of computer you buy because both Dell and HP will be running either Western Digital or samsung HDD, run through the customization process and built a pc on both sides with same name brand components and than go for price.

I don't like Dell, they are cheap but they are not well made and their support (in the UK anyway) is not good.

If you are woried about HDD failure go find a machine that offers mirroring as hardware built-in... that will cover you against a disk failing but does mean you need to buy two disks instead of 1 and only get to have half the space. Not sure Dell or HP do this in their low-end PCs... maybe only in their high end servers.

But in reality, HDDs are pretty reliable for a few years... I've not lost data (yet) because of an in-use HDD failing. I know a couple of people who have had disk problems that lost data, so I'd guess that it's a few % chance of a disk failing in the first couple of years. I've had disks that have failed... but I've had warnings (like they get noisy or have to retry or find dead patches) and replaced them before they died.

Also, buy yourself an external disk drive and use it to make backups on... 2 copies, safer than 1. Means you only lose your most recent stuff which is the easiest to recreate or find elsewhere.

Go with the Dell, I have a HP and have had nothing but problems. HP wants to update my system every time I restart the computer when I install something

Dell or HP ? well if you have to get one of them go for Dell.
No need to worry about HDD failures, it rarely happens, and nothing can really be done to prevent it.
