You need an agent. You need to be friendly and marketable, and be able to sell any product in 20 seconds or less. You also need to convince the casting directors, their assistants, and the heads of large corporations that you can sell that product in such a short period of time to millions of people. That your face and actions will capture the attention of people who would otherwise channel surf during commercials...
Even if you can't stand the taste or the smell of it... :-)

Commercial casting usually goes through an agent. (If it's a "cattle call" audition, they're usually only looking for background.)

You need to be personable, friendly and flexible.

The strongest training recommendation I have is to take improv classes. Over 75% of commercial auditions involve improvisation. I would also recommend a commercial class, so you know how to present yourself.

Ugh.

I hated modeling.

Commercials are a pain in the butt. They make you do the same things again, and again, and again, and again....and unless you live in a foreign country they don't pay you enough to make it worth it--they make you pay them. How lame is that? You're the one doing all the work..

I really hated modeling. So why do people model, and why is it every girl's dream to be on a magazine? I'll never know. It's a waste of time with no gain except a little popularity that only comes if you are willing to give up everything else to look nice. It's pointless. Waste of time.

I promise.

If you really want to be in one though, go for it.

You have to find a modeling agency, and they'll take your pictures and make you pay a fee...

Look up modeling agencies where you live on google.

You try out of them.

Local commercials are non-union, but national commercials are union so you have to be at least SAG Eligible.
