I'm thinking of going there next year to work at an orphanage? A friend of a friend runs the orphanage & has offered me free meals and board if i teach english. Would i get paid? (not essential- don't mind doing it voluntarily) and how much money would i need in savings for about a 6 month stay?

English teaching is a great international job. But... You should be paid. Starting rate in south east Asia is $10 an hour and it goes up very quickly. If you are in one of the larger cities of Brazil and in an area with and orphanage it is probably a rough part of town and can be quite dangerous. Find out before you go down. Try to get specifics of the town and neighborhood and get back to us in another question. I love Brazil but you have to keep your eyes open and your back covered. Like most places in the world. good luck
PS: food and staples in Brazil are very inexpensive. $1000 a month for living expenses would have you living like a king, or Queen as the case may be.

I think you should ask this questions for the person that is going to bring you here. First, i don't know where you are staying, so i it's difficult to say that. How can we know if you are going to be paid? You must ask your friend that. If you are going to work in the orphanage, then yes, you must be paid! But you said that you are going to be a voluntary...so...i think it says for it self. How much money do you need , depends, qhere are you staying, if you plan to go to trips, go to night, have dinners in restaurants, buy closes, acomodation, etc.
But you also can work voluntarily in the orphanage, and also get a job in a english school. It won't be hard for you. So that way you can mantaing a good padron of life.

I think is a wonderful thing you are doing, I'm myself was adopted. If you want, mail me, i can give you more help if i know whee you are staying ans stuff.

Take care.
