Perth or melbourne?

Question

Hi me and my boyfriend are looking to move to oz and its a toss up between perth and melbourne. We are 25 yrs old and dont really know much about either place. We are looking for a lively place where we can earn a good living and rent a place without paying the earth. Any suggestions?

G'day,

I've been living in Melbourne for over 16years and unfortunately I have not visited Perth yet. Hopefully one day. Now this is what I can say about Melbourne:
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day in summer, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.

I certainly hope this helps. Yes, there will be some time needed for adjustments, but there will be helps and supports along the way since Australia is built by immigrants (yes, this include the Anglo-Saxons and the Aborigins, so I've been told).

If I were 25, I'd choose Melbourne.

If I were 55, I'd choose Perth.

Melbourne is much more lively. It's got a great international vibe. Perth is a little inward-looking and very hard to do any decent travel from.

Rent-wise, Melbourne was more, but you could usually do better with the income and come out ahead. Things are changing rapidly there though - Perth is booming, but the money for dental nurses may not be...

Perth might be nicer for a visit (very pretty, relaxed), but to live I'd have to recommend Melbourne.

Hi!! Im originaly from Melbourne but moved to Perth in Feb. I love both cities but I had to get out of Melb cause I wanted to be somewhere more quite!!!

Melbourne has an unreal nightlife atmosphere and there is prob more to do there.

Perth on the other hand is cleaner and peacefull.

The public transport system in Melbourne is fantastic where as in Perth it would be best if you had a car (trains are not bad though).

I would choose Perth but again it comes down to what u like!!

You can get some pretty cheap places in Perth but maybe stay a few km away from the city!

I have lived in Perth all my life and visit Melbourne often. As a place to start if you are living in Australia for the first time, I would definitely say Perth. Western Australia is a nice place to start out. The rent is reasonable, still better than Eastern states even with increases.

Work is aplenty. The people in WA in general are much friendlier and we are willing to help out "out of towners" where we can.

In size, we are smaller, but also friendlier in my experience. If you know your way around Melbourne, as I now do, then much easier.

Vote 1 Perth :)

I have lived in Melbourne for a few years and now am back home in Perth (P.S it never ever snows here). Personally if you are still in your night clubbing years have a think about Melbourne as it is a trendy, active fashionable city with plenty to do. On the down side it is colder than Perth and has less affordable rent.

Perth on the other hand is a great family type city with lower levels of crime and pollution, smaller population and warmer weather. Rent is bit cheaper but is rapidly increasing so watch out for this as there a bit of rental property shortage. Perth is currently leading Australia's economic boom with a massive mining industry flourishing.....work is plentiful and Western Australia's people are feeling the profits flowing.

Perth is OK for a visit but I wouldn't want to live there, it is too far from anywhere else. Melbourne is bigger and cheaper than Perth with more nightlife, things to do and places to go. Perth used to be cheap but it is no longer so. It is already more expensive than Melbourne and rapidly overtaking Sydney as the most expensive city in Australia. House rental is already higher in Perth than in Sydney.

My personal preference for a city would be Sydney but Melbourne is a great city too and I've lived there three times and enjoyed it. I have been to Perth many times so I do know what I'm talking about.

As a young person i would have to say Melbourne. Melbourne has great nightlife and great music. Its a very pretty European style city. It is also larger than Perrth which would make it easier to find work as a dental nurse. You would be able to find a nice place to rent maybe 10 - 20 mins out of the CBD that wouldnt cost you to much.

Summer in melbourne can be quite warm

I think Perth is a good place to start because Sydney and Melbourne rent rates are constantly going up; I grew up in Perth and working now in Sydney. Rent isn't too bad in Perth.

Definitey Melbourne...If you want night life, entertainment and shopping. If you're looking for a quite place then maybe Perth but if not go Melbourne. I've been living here for 10 years and i love it besides its the city where things happen.
