Scientists could use genetic engineering to make animals smart enough to talk?

Excellent answers! Of course they communicate loads now, but I meant talk like an everyday human.

Would you really want your pets to talk? Isn't there things that you don't want people to know you do but your pets know, how would you like it if every time some one came to your house your dog told them that you sing when you go to the bathroom or something like that its bad enough that kids learn how to talk and embarrass you, pets would just be too much.

my dog and cat each speak volumes by their actions.
really, Muffin Man, it's not so much intelligence that would need altered, but the vocal abilities (changing the palate, tongue muscles, vocal chords) for many animals to be able to be able to hold rudimentary conversations.
fine question, which i nearly failed to answer.
yes, it would be a marvelous thing.

Animals already have their own languages. I don't see how we will ever communicate with Aliens if we can't even understand all the critters from our own world.

They can talk. My Mom and Dad's dog tells me stories every time I go out there... I say things like "really, and what else did you do?" and she gets all excited and starts "talking" to me again. It's so funny.

If they were smart enough to talk, they'd be smart enough to take over...the world would soon be conquered by house pets and angry livestock.

We're working on it ... we've come as far as getting them to moan, hum, mur mur, and what not ... it's a work in progress. Some day my friend, some day!
