im 15 and i opened a savings account 4 months ago. because i am a minor my parents had to sign for me to get the account. however, all the money inserted into the account i worked for by myself.

My parents applied for food stamps last year and they gave my parents too much money. We were told we would have to pay the money back. My parents said no they were not going to pay it back because it was the governments mistake, not ours.

so, this month i get my bank statement. i have $16 in there. i was trippin out because i know i had $366 in there. i have my bank receipts for the money and everything.

apparently since the account was in my moms name, the government found out about it and went in and got their money back. but the money was not my moms, it was all mine, i worked for it!!

Can they do this?? i lost $350

The government just does what it wants, it's the same here in England. They do whatever they please and they do not care about us "Little people".

Yeah they can. A similar situation like that happened to my uncle. The government gave him the wrong person's check. His name and everything was on it. After he spent it, they told him to pay it back. Him and his wife have separate and an account together so her separate account the government took the money. Its sad that they can do that. And truly in your situation that was there fought, and they should give the money back. But you know its government rules. I hope somehow you can earn your money back and fix up your car. Good luck. Try babysitting, working at McDonald's or something. I'm sure you can raise some money before October. Good luck!

Yes they can. Your parents were right it wasn't their fault it was the governments fault...But sometimes the government do those kind of things as tests. Like to see how honest you are. They expect for your parents to report anything different with their food stamps whether it goes up or down. I'm sorry you lost your money! But thats how it goes! If your parents had more than $300 extra they definitely should have reported it because Its like stealing...Reporting it would have been the right thing to do! Then none of this would have ever happened! Good luck! =D

The account was in your mother's name, so yes, they can do that. The only thing you can do is take her to small claims court if you can prove the money was yours. This might cause some pretty hard feelings, though. From now on, either keep your money in cash and well hidden, or get someone you can really trust to keep it for you. Sorry about your situation, but just look at the lost money as payment for room and board.
