Its a means of smoking flavored tobacco. It has much less side affects than both cigars and cigarettes. Not really addicting, no nicotine, no rat poisoning, and the best part... You never get direct contact with the tobacco.
Basically there is water at the bottom. The coal from the top causes the water to evaporate. When the water evaporates, it gets mixed with the tobacco at the top right under the coal. This causes the vapor to turn thicker and to become flavored. Than the hose at the side of the hookah is sucked on by the person. This sucks out some of the flavored water vapor. Once sucked in, you blow it out. Its similar to the cigar/cigarette that you can control inhalation to a certain level. However, if you are going to inhale, inhaling the hookah is much much better than inhaling a cigar or cigarette because for cigar/cigarette, you are basically putting your mouth on the tobacco (unless you use a filter). Even with a filter, cigar and cigarette's tobacco has way to much extra unnecessary things, where as a hookah flavor, as long as you get th right one, doesn't have crap.
Though middle easterners have used the hookah only with the flavored tobacco for the sake of having a good time with guests, the hookah has been Westernized and now there is a way that you can replace the hookah flavored tobacco with weed, something middle easterners would never do. I don't know exactly how that works or whatever.
Other secrets exist about the hookah. If you mix in some milk with the water, the smoke is thicker. If you put in vodka with the water, you get messed up FAST! etc, etc...
The hookah is pretty cool, and it comes in many cool designs that you can display at your house. It looks nice and classy. If guests come over, rather than smoking cigarettes or something, hookah is so much better.
The best thing about hookah is that it doesn't make you smell like **** where as a cigarette causes you to smell for days!

Hookah is a pipe that was devised in India for smoking tobacco (and other such substances). It has a hose that you inhale the smoke from. The bowl of the hookah holds the tobacco, the bottle holds a water jar (the smoke passes through the water, gaining moisture and making it easier to inhale than the smoke of a cigarette), and a lump of charcoal is placed on top of the tobacco.
