I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, and its pretty slow now. I was wondering what i could do to speed it up. I'm pretty good with computers but I'm far from a pro. I have 512mb of memory, If I buy more memory will it speed up? (ex 1gb)? or is there something else i can do....?

wool i think if you put more memory in it the computer will go faster but it also depends on the possessor if you have something lyk a Pentium 3 it will be going slow i lyk amd dual cores but you cant upgrade Ur possessor unless Ur gonna get a new mother Bord but the extra memory will make a good difference with your speed and your computer will be able to handle beta games and more programs open because you got more ram i got 2 gig ddr2 ram and amd duo core possessor and g force 7900 and it runs so fast i get no lag what so eva. Make shore you get the rite types of ram theres different types of ram there sd ddr and ddr2 theres more but its very rare of you to have other types Ur computer probably takes ddr or sd if you think its slow most new computers take ddr2
and to fix ur file that u deleted that made another problem just run a system restore and just get more ram my other computer runs very slow it has 256 sd ram and i deleted all the files and stuff it made a little difference and wen i reformatted it the computer ran fine it will be a good idea if u reformat because all the junk will go

More Memory will definatly speed it up. 512mb is decent, but you might want to consider upgrading it. Otherwise you can try the following for a minor speed boost:
1) Get rid of any unnecessary programs
2) Delete old files that you no longer need (for faster driver access)
3) Run the disk defragmenter Start > Accessories > System Tools
4) Download CCleaner and run the cleaner and Registry cleaner
5) Use ccleaner's startup item editor or open run and type msconfig and modify your startup items and get rid of things you don't need, but be very careful not to delete anything important otherwise your in trouble. (I would reccomend CCleaner for this one)
These should help speed your computer up a little bit, but if your looking for a major jump in speed, upgrade your ram, check what kind of memory your computer is compatible with and then go search some stuff out on eBay. Also check your processor speed if it is too out of date you might want to consider buying a new computer all together.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.
The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:
http://makepcfaster.info
lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.
Good luck!

hi, try to run diagnostics first on your hard drive, upgrading your RAM would be a good thing, but try this steps first just to make sure. just restart your computer and press F12 on the dell logo, you should get a Boot Menu screen, just select the option for "Diagnostics" it will run the pre-boot system assesment, if you got any error code on the DST short test, your hdd had gone bad. otherwise its more on software, If you got XP just go to START-->RUN then type in msconfig , click the startup tab and disable all of the startup items, apply changes and close it will ask for restart, if after the restart still got same problems? scan your computer for possible virus or spyware infection. otherwise just call Dell. =) hope this helps. Good Luck!

Here's a free little tool that I just love. Alway's remember to click on the check for issue's button before running the cleaner. It's really quick and will add quite a bit of speed. I've had it for over a year and it's never failed me.

you will find many helpful tools to keep your pc or mac running smooth.
Also this one is another free one that AOL give's out and you don't have to have an account with them to get it. It keep's an eye on your other tool's, anti-virus etc. and makes sure they are up to date and running properly.
