At the moment I've got basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, chives, parsley, sage, and chamomile growing inside my house. They all make great indoor plants and work very well in containers. I grew them all from seeds. And if you don't want indoor herbs you can certainly move all of them outside into your garden when the time is right, more or less after your area's last frost.
Fastest growers I have to say are the basil and the thyme. You have to keep an eye out on parsley it can get out of hand very fast.
They all sprouted a few days ahead of their scheduled germination time and are very bountiful after about three months of growth.
You can use them all in cooking, save perhaps for the chamomile...eventually when mine decides to flower I'd like to make some tea or some oil.
Mint is rather hard to grow, least for me it is, I haven't been successful with it yet, you might be better off going out and buying a mint plant, but they are very nice to have around.
Also a lot of the herbs I listed do really well when you're rooting cuttings to make more plants quickly, especially the basil, few days in water and they'll root like crazy.
Hope that helps.

Herbs are a doddle to grow! But remember that they can be intrusive, so best planted in pots NOT in the ground.
Basil is great as you can just pinch off a few leaves and throw them in a salad - along with coriander leaves (collect and save seeds too!). Chives also are easy to grow, and you can just snip them up to put in salads too.

Basil: used in potato salad and pesto
oregano: seasoning in stews and sauces
cilantro: used in salsa
sage: used to season meat dishes and stews
bay: used in stews
lemon balm: Used in tea
mint: used in tea, water, and deserts
chamomile: as tea
sweet herb: just fun to chew on
parsley: used a decoration and in potato salad, and salsa
chives: used in potato salad, stir fries, salsa, basically anything you'd use onions in.
garlic chives: same as for chives
Marigold: decoration
Nasturtium: decoration and salads
Rose: decoration and salads
All are easy to grow. Mints and chives are probably the easiest because they grow and spread like weeds. Best to grow these in containers.
