3 men go into a motel.

The man behind the desk said the room is R30, so each man paid R10 and went to the room.

A while later the man behind the desk realized the room was only R25, so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guy's room with R5.

On the way the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split R5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man a R1 and kept the other R2 for himself.

This meant that the 3 men each paid R9 for the room, which is a total of R27, add the R2 that the bellboy kept = R29.

Where is the other Rand ?

Careful;

This proves that we cannot trust mathematics in all that we are doing.

It's all in the wording. The men paid R9 each which is R27. the trick is when you add the R2 that the man has. That R2 is already in the R27 . You should be adding the R3 that the three men have between them (because the R27 is made up of what the men have paid so the remainder should be made up of what they did not hand over.
Its all to do with BODMAS
if they paid 30 - supposed to get 5 but got 3
so really it would be 28(25+3) so 30-5=25+3=28+2=30

When they got their R3 given back, they only paid R27 and not R30. The room cost R25 and the bellboy got an affirmitive bonus off R2.Why do you add the R2 the bellboy took, you should subtract it from the R27 the men payed.

I got it...

10 from each man
10
10
--------
30 total
- 5 off original price
-----------
25 total paid
+ 3 total refund
-----------
28 total paid back to the men not $27
+ 2 went to the bellboy
-----------
30

$30 accounted for

Heres the break down...

$25 is the original price and the price the three men paid.
The extra $5 (thats on the way back to them) I'm not worried about yet.

So $25 is the original price that is paid. Divide that by the 3 men = $8.33 each.
Thats how much each man has paid to get the $25.
So now each man has...

1man has $8.33
2man has $8.33
3man has $8.33

Now back to the $5 the bellboy has. He keeps $2 which means $3 goes back to the men/$1 back to each man.

So now add $1 to each man...

1man has $8.33 +$1= $9.33
2man has $8.33 +$1= $9.33
3man has $8.33 +$1= $9.33
---------
$27.99
+ $2.00 (the bellboy has)
----------
$29.99

$29.99 (almost) = $30.00
