No Al Gore did not invent the Internet.

What he did say was "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

What Gore was doing was padding his resume by claiming to have invented the Internet.

If he had anything to do with it at all it had to do with him being an advocate for a high-speed national networking. At best that was a precursor to what we know now as the Internet.

He never claimed to have invented the internet.
That is a misconception promoted by right-wing media, by taking what he said completely out of context, in an attempt to discredit him anyway they can.

what Al Gore actually said:

In 1999, various media outlets suggested that Gore claimed that he "invented the internet", in reference to a CNN interview in which he said, "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

In response to this controversy, Internet pioneers Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn wrote a 2000-09-29 article (originally sent via email) which described Gore's contributions to the Internet since the 1970s, including his work on the Gore Bill:

“ [A]s the two people who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time. Last year the Vice President made a straightforward statement on his role. He said: "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet." We don't think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he "invented" the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet. The fact of the matter is that Gore was talking about and promoting the Internet long before most people were listening. We feel it is timely to offer our perspective. As far back as the 1970s Congressman Gore promoted the idea of high speed telecommunications as an engine for both economic growth and the improvement of our educational system. He was the first elected official to grasp the potential of computer communications to have a broader impact than just improving the conduct of science and scholarship. Though easily forgotten, now, at the time this was an unproven and controversial concept.

No--he was jsut one of the first people to use the term.

In fact, no one person "invented" the Internet. It emerged out of the increasing complexity and capability to connect and communicate between computers. The technology and software reached a "threshhold" point in 1995 with faster microprocessors and the new Windows 95 operating system.

But Gore never claimed to have "invented" the Internet--any more than he claims to be a scientist with regard to global warming--he's a spokesman explaining the science and its meaning--and has never said otherwise.

The accusations that he claims ootherwise are smear tactics on the part of the right wing, and are outright lies.

Nice try commodore, but check the dates. There was legislation in Congress to help fund what became the Internet but that bill passed the same year that Al Gore was elected. He took office the next year after passage. Gore was trying to take some credit for something that happened before he could get involved. He never said he invented the Internet but that "he was instrumental in the legislation that developed the Internet". Still not true.

First...it is so previous...yet enable me sparkling it up for you besides... Al Gore under no circumstances reported he "invented the internet"....he reported.."we've been almost inventing the internet as we went alongside". He did no longer individually invent the internet. Al Gore replaced into heavily in contact interior the earliest ranges of making and investment the creation of the internet. - certainty.

He never said that. He did help the Internet in its infancy get off the ground with funding and programs that helped tremendously. Anyone who was involved with the creation of the Internet will tell you Gore played a large part in helping it become what it has become. No, he didn't invent it or claim to have. But he sure did help it stand and walk and finally run.

As a Senator he helped fight for funding for programs like the Arpanet, a military system of interlinking computers which let to the Internet. Then he also promoted making the technology available to the public. He was an avid spokesperson for that cause.
So no, he didn't invent the internet, but he never said that specifically. He said he was "part of the team that helped create the Internet." and I think that given the facts that's reasonably true. Politicians are credited for the success of programs they fought for. If not for him, the funding might have been killed or the technology might have stayed strictly in the hands of the US military, in which case, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Or at best, if he hadn't've been involved, and those initiatives and bills had failed, the internet would've come out later and wouldn't be as advanced as it is today. He didn't create the technology, no, but I do congratulate him for having the foresight to see how it could be useful.

Claim: Vice-President Al Gore claimed that he "invented" the Internet.

Status: False.

I call a spade a spade, even if I don't like spades.

He was supposedly in the Senate when the funding to develop it for the military came up for a vote.

He did, however, later go on to invent a new religion.
