I really can't explain why it angers me, it just does. My whole family is infatuated with antiques and I think it's a load of garbage. A spoon worth $6000? give me a break, it doesn't even provide the function it was intended? a char worth $4000 but you can't sit down in it after a long day of work?

I understand that history and culture play a part in the value to an extent but come on. Be realistic. I can understand a gun from a war, or something.

This sort of attitude clutters houses with junk that will never be let go.

I'm not trying to offend people who do this sort of thing for a living, but I think some of it is blown way out of proportion

There are very few spoons worth $6,000. But those that are have a history, such as being authenticated as having been used by a historically significant person.

Any antique is worth what someone is willing to pay for it, neither more nor less. If you were to stop thinking about what they cost and start thinking about what they are worth, you will realize that your family is building up a significant legacy for your future. Become well informed about one part of the antiques and collectibles market and you may find there is a place in it for you, too.

Don't kid yourself about it will never be let go. When it goes into the estate of the person who collected it, most of it will be liquidated. Turned into cash. Possibly a great deal of cash.
