Well Slavery existed before the Democrats did, the Democrats were originally the Anti-Federalists then they were the Democratic-Republicans (actually called Republican for short) then dropped Republican from the Democratic-Republican name.
The Democratic party did eventually wind up backing Slavery when the Democrats and the Whigs were the main parties.
The Whigs did not have an Anti-Slavery platform itself but Anti-Slavery wing did exist.
The Republican party was formed as an Anti-Slavery party by loads of Anti-slavery Whigs and members of minor parties (some caleld Know Nothing parties since such parties ran things in secret and would answer I don't know, when asked a question).
Anti-slavery Democrats who defected from their party for the Pro-slavery stance also joined in on the creation of the Republican party as well.
It was indeed the Republicans who fought tooth and nail to end Slavery.

It's true that a "republican" was responsible for the abolishment of slavery. But if u go back and check the values they had were vice versa to the ones today. A republican back then would be considered a democrat today and a democrat would be a republican. Come on people remember history class in high school? Or even in college. The political values back then were completely different.

Gee, slavery had and has gone on for thousands of years, long before there were Republicans and Democrats.
The Democratic Party traces its origins to the Democratic-Republican Party, founded by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other influential opponents of the Federalists in 1792.
So to answer your question. No, the democrats are not the ones responsible for slavery, BOTH parties are.

Slavery was about long before Democrats. It was around before the United States. As for Republicans putting an end to it, yes. Abraham Lincoln was a member of the Republican party and it was his actions that abolished slavery.

Actually it was the Dutch who got slavery started--Both Democrats and Republicans played a major part in slavery. From the Africans point of view did not wish to leave their Country, think on these terms for awhile--they were brought here against their will---now we have the problem of people breaking the law to enter illegally. Regarding history: Slavery is the black sheep in America.

Yes, those were Democrat-Republicans that later became the Democrats! Lincoln was a Whig in the Congress!
Also joining the Republican Party in the 1850s were supporters of the Know Nothing Party. The Know Nothings were most concerned about immigrants coming into the country, competing against labor, and suppressing wages. They favored restrictive immigration and protective tariffs to keep wages high, while Democrats supported both immigration and free trade.
The Whig Party formed the core of the Republican Party with its economic platform consisting of protectionism for industry, a national bank and currency, a large national debt, and a larger federal government engaged in extensive public works.
Also joining the Republican ranks were the Prohibitionists and the Abolitionists. Members of the Republican Party generally shared an opposition to slavery and advocated policies of containment and colonization.
The ambitious economic agenda of the Republican Party had its roots in the economic platforms of Federalist icon Alexander Hamilton and Whig leader Henry Clay. They advocated protective tariffs for industry, a national bank, and plenty of public works and patronage. The flurry of new laws, regulations, and bureaucracies created by Lincoln and the Republican Party during the early 1860s foreshadowed Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal" for the volume, scope and questionable constitutionality of its legislative output.

Democrats certainly are not responsible for slavery, as it existed in Britain, the United States, and a number of other countries (INCLUDING Africa) long before the democratic party came about.
HOWEVER, it is most certainly true that there were many prominent dems who, at the very least, fought against the equal rights movement (like Robert "KKK" Byrd).
The Republican party WAS largely responsible for the decline of slavery and for the progress of the equality movement. In fact, the GOP was originally formed here in Michigan as a party with a platform based in the abolitionist movement.

Well, Licoln was a Republican but that party was new and was an amalgamation of antislavery Whigs and other third party scraps.
He handed out military positions to both Democrats and Republicans equally.
Licoln's opposion was the Democratic Party and some of them did indicate in arguements at the time he was trying to become a dictator by infringing the individual states right to self-goververnance on the issue of slavery.
There were 2 other radical third parties around that time that radically oppposed slavery (immediate end of slavery by force) as opposed the the republican traditional/gradual change approuch.
Once the succession of states began it forced the issue. Licoln and most of his party historically opposed the use of force to end slavery but aggreed that force must be used to return the integrety of the union.
Your question brings up an arguable issue but for myself no party ended or started slavery: the greed and arrogance of alot of indiviuals who were supported to some degree by our country's governing parties allowed it to exist here and enough people willing to suffer, kill or die opposing slavery, educating others to oppose it, slaves fighting for their own rights and at least some of the powers that be, supporting antislavery movements/actions caused its legal end here.

While true, you have to remember that in the 19th Century (and the first half of the 20th) the basic beliefs of the Democratic Party and Republican Party were reversed. It wasn't until the 1960's that the party platforms reshuffled themselves to what we know them as today. Most people are ignorant to this fact.
Republicans like to take credit for Lincoln, but truth is if he were alive today he would be a Democrat.
What was Republican then is Democrat today, what was Democrat then is Republican today.
