I've always wondered if you do all the math in your head or your sitting there with your handy dandy paper and pencil, kindly helping everyone out...?
Man, you people are so smart! Seriously!

well...depends..but mostly I'm definitely not smart enough to work it all out in my head...lol...i usually write out all the steps on my workbook and do rough copy notes on spare sheets of paper as well! and i use a calculator when i do even simple arithmetic problems...lol....like 35 - 26...i cant do that off hand!!

maybe the kind of problems i work out in my head would be like 5 + 4 or 1 + 7...hehe...that's about it...lol...the rest i have to either write out on paper or put it in the calculator!!!

It depends on the question. Sometimes I use a calculator, sometimes not. If it requires writing out I can usually just type it into the answer box. Unless there is a diagram, I don't usually need to write it out with paper and pencil before typing it. If I get to a step in typing it that requires a calculator I use it then.

For this question no calculator was required and no paper and pencil. I just typed in the answer.

It depends on the question. For many problems I can just work it out mentally as I type. Some require a calculator. Some require a diagram or sketch. And some require that I star it, sit down with pen and paper and work it out first before typing.

I too think as much as possible of the procedure through and then solve as necessary. I use paper rarely here and have an HP 48 in easy reach for the calculations that don't work in my head

The problem is not so much doing the sum, but putting in a form that is easily understood by you. I see so many questions answered by just giving the answer, with no explanation at all, when it`s clear that the questioner has little idea of the mathematical principles involved. I really enjoy explaining how, and why, I got the solution, but there again, I`m a teacher, not a mathematician. Not that this answers your question of course...........................

My weapon of choice is Mathematica, one of the world's most powerful (and fussiest) calculating programs.
