I am 41 years old , lean and am basically healthy - not a great body or stamina but no problems either. I hv just started swimming and i would like to know what is considered a 'good workout'. My pool is 15 m long and right now i can't do more than 2 laps continuously. How many should i aim for in an hours time?
I would like a target to motivate myself. Thanks

I just recently read that one hour of swimming Treading and laps) can burn as much as 500 to 1200 calories. You can also do resistance workouts in water. It is safer on the joints and it breaks up the monotony of laps. Be sure to drink water after swimming (not pool water:-). Even though you don't feel it you are sweating and do not want to dehydrate after your workout.

Daily Swimming Workout

It depends on what kind of workout you want. As a competitive swimmer, we used to do lower intensity/high yardage workouts for the first hour/hour and a half, and spend the last 60-90 minutes doing higher intensity, shorter distance workouts.

Try mixing up your workouts where you swim at an even pace for distance, then go for broke on shorter distances. That way you won't get bored. If you want a number to try and obtain, see how much you can to in an hour, and try to improve on that total distance next time. The distance that works for you will be different than the distance that works for me or others. The distance really doesn't matter unless you are training for a race. If you are aiming to become more physically fit, what matters is you get your heart rate up for that hour.

There is no golden target for everyone. You should work towards improvement. First, how many meters can you swim in one hour? Try to double that in one month. Your first month you will see the most improvement. After that, you will slowly plateau out. Change it up a little. Sprints, long distance, anything you can think of.

Try to add 1 lap each time you go in. You probably won't manage it but keep trying. Just try to do more than the last time, that way you're always trying to improve. Otherwise you'll reach a set goal and think you've done enough.

Hi,
As u defined very much in your Q? . As ur age is 40+ than i suggest you to keep the same routing as u r going on currently but if u can manage swim twice a day in a same routing .Oe in morning hours & one in evening hours .

This will help you out. But increasing ur swim by meters it mit exhaust u & ur heath too.

Try this & let us knwo ur feed back.

Take care ...
