1. Dragonlance Chronicles
2. anything by Terry Pratchett
3. Lion of Macedonia by David Gemmel
4. Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks
5. Outlander by Diana Galbadon (ok, not fantasy really, but it is about an english woman in the 1940's who steps through standing stones and ends up in 17th century Scotland. Very funny).

1. Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer (I want Eclipse... Only 24 more days I think now)
2. The Black Magician Series by Trudi Canavan
3. Sevenwaters Series by Juliet Marilier (especially Son of Shadows but they are all awesome books)
4. The Trinity Series by Fiona McIntosh (though I was a tad disappointed by the ending...)
5. I love all of Tamora Pierce's books so any of those...
[6. The Gene of Isis by Tracey Harding (I couldn't leave this off the list ^^)]

(ok so there are a few more than 5 books there but if I like one in a series I like the others too and I though my list would be better [and more comprehensive] if I included books in the same series together) : )

1) The Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien) - 1954-5 Perhaps the greatest modern fantasy epic, with its sly digs at industrial society.

2) The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis) - 1950 First book of the Narnia epic, an extended but lightly done Christian parable partaking of a hodge podge of mythological themes.

3) The Last Unicorn (Peter S. Beagle) - 1968 A UNicorn quests after her kind, in a fallen, post-Magical world.

4) Titus Groan (Mervyn Peake) - 1946 Beginning of the Gormenghast trilogy. As important (or more) than Tolkien to modern fantasy.

5) The Broken Sword (Poul Anderson) - 1954 Full-tilt Norse fantasy of changelings, trolls in the Elfland of Faerie.

In no real order and subject to change depending on mood and what I've read most recently. Also, due to the way fantasy publishing works these days, I've selected mostly series rather than books

George R. R. Martin Song of Ice and Fire
Patrick Rothfuss Name of the Wind
Katherine Kerr Deverry books
Elizabeth Moon Deed of Paksennarion
Tad Williams War of the Flowers

1. Black Jewel Trilogy (because its really one giant book, Anne Bishop)
2. Fool Trilogy (by Robin Hobb, same as above)
3. Wizards First Rule (Terry Goodkind)
4. Anything by Anne Mccaffrey (The Dragon Riders of Pern)
5. Anything by Orson Scott Card

When I say anything I mean I love their writing so much that I can't pick just one. Hobb seems to be an author like that, though I've only read four of her books.
