GMT stands for Grenwich(spelling) Mean time. It is the time which all other timezones are based off of. for example central timezone in the USA is -6:00 GMT since when it is 6pm here it is midnight there.

IST and BST are timezoens in other parts on the world.

Just to follow up on that... The earth is about 24,900 miles around at the equator, so the 24 time zones are a little more than 1,000 miles at that point. Greenwich, England, is the center point for GMT, and most time is given in relation to GMT.

The catch is the International Date Line. Fly west over it, and you go from July 13 to July 14, for example. So you are technically gaining 23 hours on your watch instead of losing an hour. Fly east, and you go from July 14 to July 13.
