I am 23 and I have been going through something very similar. My mom is luckily a personal trainer, so she has been guiding me. I was 80 pounds overweight, with a high body fat percentage. i am now only 49 pounds overweight. I'll tell you what i have been doing.

I work out 6 days a week doing vigorous cardio anywhere from an hour to an hour and 10 minutes. I usually do my cardio on an elliptical machine. I also do yoga 3 times a week and weight/strength train 3 times a week. I have been very committed to making a life change and so over the past 3 months i have lost 29 pounds.

I am a vegetarian so unfortunately i cant use protein as a crutch to my weight loss. I eat a lot of fresh berries and oatmeal. Lean Cuisine has been a blessing. I also eat a lot of Morning Star products (vegetarian food) . I drink a ton of water.

It has worked for me, it will work for you if your willing to commit. Good Luck!

The way of eating is the most important factor with diet. Excercise is also important but it's a small percentage of diet. Like the old saying goes "you are what you eat." Sad but true.
So if you are truely motivated, really watch what you eat- I mean REALLY watch what you eat. I'd advise u to have a food journal and go on fitday.com and search under the number of calories you take in per day. Try to keep it under 1000 calories.
Eating frequent SMALLER meals a day helps alot. So instead of 2 full meals a day, eat 5-6 small meals/appetizer/snack type foods a day, meaning meals that won't stuff you or make you full, just enough until you're not hungry any more. This way, your metabolism is always working and burning fat. And since you're 22, your metabolism is still working fast!
I also strongly advise you to go the low carb diet. Carbs are so hard to lose during exercise. You can search around on the internet about low carb diets.
To give you a quickie, basically after 2 whole days of low carb eating, you're body will start burning stored fat and you'll feel a flu-like symptom which tells you that the diet is working. The worse the feeling the more your body depends on carbs for energy. The 1st week if you want to lose it fast, stick with lean beef, protein foods, egg whites, tuna, shrimp, and chicken. After that your body will adjust to the low carb diet and the weight will literally fall off you! After a week or so, you will natrually not be as hungry often and you'll be able to keep under 1000 calories. Gradually you add in veggies and fruits. Then further out you add in some grains and carb type food but you don't want to eat it excessively. Also during this time it's always best to go to the gym to tone up and exercise. You don't have to do hardcore exercising but working out a few time a week is good for you regardless. Make sure you DRINK ALOT OF WATER, 6-8 cups a day.
If this is not the diet for you after researching online, there are plenty of other diets and exercises (especially high interval and weight training) that will work, only if you keep with it.
I know it does take time, but don't be discouraged and then binge on that bag of chips and dip. Trust me I know the feeling. Binging is a no-no. For me, the low carb worked the best for me. Hope it works for you too.
Also try not to stress out over your weight, stress has alot to do with distribution of fat. Just relax, hope you find your motivaton and keep with it!
Hope this helps!

It takes a whole lifestyle change. I am struggling with this myself and know how you feel. The fact is that output needs to be greater than input. So, move more and eat less. Good luck with it!

Diets don't work, changing your lifestyle does. That means you need to eat healthy, exercise and drink water. It means you do this daily and keep doing it forever. I suggest you get an exercise buddy to motivate you too. It's all in what you eat and whether you exercise or not.
